Audience Expectations of the Horror Genre

We carried out some research to find out what Audience expectations were of the horror genre.

Interviews:

Common themes and ideas throughout the interviews were:

• Gore/ blood
• Zombies
• Generally undeveloped story lines
• Jump-scares
• Suitable music and sounds

Survey:

I asked for their gender so I can identify the target audience more easily.

I then asked what the most important thing to them is in an opening sequence.

I then asked more specifically about the horror genre.

Common themes in the survey answers are:

• having a sense of mystery/ambiguity
• having spooky and relevant music
• not giving away the ending of the story too quickly
• having scary moments or jump scares

Final Cut Pro Workshop

Today we had the opportunity to learn all about the editing software, Final Cut Pro! It was a great experience and we learnt lots of new skills and techniques from a professional editor and journalist.

Some tools and skills I learnt how to use were:

• new keyboard commands and shortcuts

• how to apply transitions

 

• using audio effects          

   

         

• adding and editing titles         

  

Here are the videos and bits of film we got to make and edit during the course of the workshop:

1. Here is a video where we used effects to slow down and speed up the film.

2. A video where we experimented with different effects such as colour, text and changing the opacity on a piece of film.

3. A video where we experimented with even more effects, but this time on some of our own footage rather than pre-recorded. We changed the opacity, added filters, edited sound and more.

CLASSIFYING FILM (pages 14-17, issue 49)

 What I learnt from this article:

• when classifying films, there are no specific criteria
• the public are able to have input in the classification of films 
• apps and iTunes now have the opportunity to classified
• classification of films is influenced by different cultural views
• it is also influenced by who their target audience is meant to be

AS Opening Sequence Review Feedback

This is my feedback from my presentation about the AS Media Opening Sequence I chose. I received a level 3/4 but must remember to be clearer and more precise in my explanations next time.

Here is a prezi presentation about the student opening sequence I chose to review, it includes the video itself as well as why I thought it was a successful piece.

GRADE	The grade I received for this task was a Level 3/4.
MRI/ TARGETS	My response is that I need to do the following to improve:  1. To improve I'll try to explain in more detail and be more specific when it comes to my explanations 2. I will take more care in presentation, using bullet  points when they should be there.

Introduction & Review on Classwork

WHAT I LEARNT TODAY
In today's lesson I learnt how to create different types of posts on a blog, such as text posts, how to make hyperlinks and how to embed photos and videos. Also, I now know what the AS course consists of in terms of coursework and exams and also briefly what the A2 course is going to involve.

REVIEW OF THE COURSEWORK WE WATCHED
We watched three examples of AS standard coursework.

Kathryn
WWW: the editing went really smoothly, allowing for the focus to be on the actual film and story line itself rather than the effects and editing.

EBI: A clearer plot would have been useful as I found some of the storyline confusing, it was nothing major, just a few continuity errors when it came to characters.

Hair
WWW: the sound was really good, it played a big part in this opening trailer and really added to the whole scare factor they were trying to create.

EBI: again, their storyline was quite unclear and it would have been useful if certain things had been explained or filmed in more detail rather then them assuming the audience would understand.

Dormant
WWW: the sound and the editing in this opening sequence was really good! It genuinely got my adrenaline going and it lived up to it's name of a horror.

EBI: once again, it was just a few small problems with the plot to the film that needed to be improved.
